According to Variety, the original lead couple of the Mummy trilogy, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, will make a comeback in The Mummy 4.
The fourth installment in the decades-old action franchise will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, according to the site. The most well-known works by Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are the 2019 film Ready or Not and the 2022 Paramount revival of the Scream franchise.
The return of the franchise's original lead couple, who last starred together in a Mummy movie 24 years ago, has elicited ecstatic reactions from fans.
Concerning the Mummy films
In the 1999 revival of The Mummy, Brendan Fraser portrays a treasure hunter in 1930s Egypt who assists an archaeologist (played by Rachel Weisz) when a cursed Egyptian priest with superhuman abilities reincarnates to rule the world.
The Mummy Returns, a sequel, was released in 2001 after the movie helped make the two actors bankable stars in Hollywood. Rachel Weisz was absent from the third movie, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
In 2017, Universal Studios made a failed attempt to bring the franchise back to life with Tom Cruise. The Mummy failed to launch the studio's so-called Dark Universe and was a commercial failure.
With the release of No Sudden Move in 2021 and an Oscar-winning performance in The Whale in 2022, Brendan Fraser's career has had a resurgence in recent years. Since then, he has made appearances in Max Barbakow's Brothers and Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.
The careers of Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser
Fraser's most recent role was in the Japanese film Rental Family, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. In addition to Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Shannon Mahina Gorman, and Akira Emoto, the film is directed by Hikari.
Since acting in the Mummy films, Rachel Weisz has also had a prosperous career. She won an Oscar for The Constant Gardener and, more recently, a BAFTA Award for The Favourite.
