Mamta Kulkarni, a former Bollywood actor who is now a seer, has caused controversy when claiming that Dawood Ibrahim "is not a terrorist" and seemingly absolving him of responsibility for the 1993 Mumbai explosions.
The former actress then took back her remarks, claiming they had been misunderstood.
Dawood is not a terrorist, according to Mamta Kulkarni.
This week, Mamta was on a three-day spiritual journey in Gorakhpur. Speaking during a news conference there on Tuesday, she said that Dawood Ibrahim "did not carry out the Mumbai blasts and is not a terrorist," according to PTI.
Many people on social media criticised her for allowing the thug to get away with it when she made the statement, which caused a stir.
One of the primary suspects in the 1993 Mumbai bombings, which left 257 people dead and over 1,000 injured, is Dawood. The don has apparently been residing in Karachi for more than 20 years, having been on the run since he fled to Dubai in the late 1980s.
Mamta explains what she said.
The former actor clarified her remarks after receiving backlash for them. Speaking to reporters in Gorakhpur on Thursday, she stated, "I was referring to Vicky Goswami, not Dawood Ibrahim." It's true that Dawood is a terrorist. The former movie star was connected to Goswami, who had already been imprisoned and arrested on drug trafficking allegations.
Mamta insisted that she has no connection to Dawood and has never met him. "I no longer have any ties to the movie business or politics. I have a strong commitment to spirituality. It is difficult for me to be associated with anti-national elements because I am a strong adherent of Sanatan Dharma," she stated.
The film career and after life of Mamta Kulkarni
In the early and mid-1990s, Mamta Kulkarni was a popular Bollywood actor who starred in films including China Gate, Karan Arjun, and Krantiveer. In 2002, she gave from acting. She made headlines in 2016 when the Thane Police accused her of being involved in an international drug ring worth ₹2000 crore.
In 2024, the Bombay High Court dismissed the charges against her, calling the proceedings "manifestly frivolous and vexatious." For the past five years, she has been a monk.
