At the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday night, India defeated the formidable Australian side and secured their place in the Women's World Cup final thanks to an outstanding innings of 127* from Jemimah Rodrigues. This victory is among the most well-known and significant in Indian cricket history.
The impact of this type of innings on the growth of women's sports, both in India and globally, cannot be overstated. Although this Indian team had talent, it was nothing in comparison to the seven-time world champions, who were the clear favourites to finish at number eight.
The Indians' enthusiastic response was expected given that the game was played at home and that the chase was historic (339 is the biggest target ever taken down in Women's ODI cricket). Back home, though, things were a little different for the Australian players.
For the Australian media back home, a couple of pivotal missed opportunities that handed Jemimah two reprieves were just unacceptable given their high standards. Rodrigues had chances but led the team home after being dismissed by captain Alyssa Healy in a basic top edge on 82 and again by Tahlia McGrath while batting on 106.
Captain Healy was dismayed by the fielding effort, calling it "un-Australian" and acknowledging that "we let ourselves down." The Sydney Morning Herald referred to it as a "sloppy display," Channel Nine branded it a "blunder," and The Australian showed little pity, merely stating that the Australians "blow World Cup shot."
India's ‘miracle’ chase receives credit
However, they also took credit for a unique chase that was well-constructed despite two powerplay wickets and completed with nine deliveries remaining. The Australian also described the feat as a "stunner," ABC News described it as a "miracle semfinal run chase," and The Roar referred to it as a "epic."
Fox Cricket has no intention of holding back. At a pivotal point in the match, captain Alyssa Healy missed a catch off Alana King, failing to hold on even with her wicketkeeping gloves on, giving Rodrigues, who was batting at 82, a lifeline. Later, Tahlia McGrath also dropped the batter.
"After a'massive' drop and 'innings of a lifetime' in the record run chase, Australia was eliminated from the World Cup," the statement read. On X, Fox Cricket also made a post. "ONCE IN A LIFETIME." Australia, good morning. Unfortunately, India's incredible run chase ended our #WomensWorldCup2025 defence overnight. "And a'massive' moment in the game turned out to be costly."
