Justice is who? Will Surya Kant become Indias next Chief Justice?

After Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai recommended that Justice Surya Kant be named as his successor, Kant is expected to become the next Chief Justice of India. He is anticipated to take office on November 24 and remain in that position until February 9, 2027, after being officially informed by the government.
In his suggestion, Chief Justice Gavai said that Justice Kant was "suited and competent in all aspects to take the helm," noting that the two came from comparable social backgrounds that were characterised by tenacity and adversity.

Gavai told Hindustan Times, "I am confident that Justice Kant would be best suited to understand the pain and sufferings of those who need the judiciary to protect their rights because, like me, he belongs to the class in society that has seen struggles at every stage of life."

A trip to the Supreme Court from Hisar
Justice Surya Kant was born in Hisar, Haryana, on February 10, 1962. His ascent is a testament to his scholastic prowess and administrative savvy. He received his legal degree from Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak in 1984 after graduating from Government Post Graduate College in Hisar.
Before transferring to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1985, where he focused on constitutional, service, and civil cases, he started his career at the Hisar district court. He represented a number of significant public organisations, including banks, boards, and universities, thanks to his astute legal judgement and well-rounded lobbying.
He was one of the most well-known legal leaders in the state when he was only 38 years old in 2000 and became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana. The next year, he was named a Senior Advocate.

Career and achievements in the judiciary
After serving for more than 14 years, Justice Surya Kant was promoted to the position of judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2004. He was renowned during his term for his strict work ethic and rulings that balanced social consciousness with constitutional accuracy.
He became Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2018 and was promoted to the Supreme Court of India in May 2019.
Justice Kant has served on multiple constitution benches at the highest court and has authored important decisions, such as the 2023 decision that upheld the repeal of Article 370. He has been involved in more than 1,000 rulings covering administrative, human rights, and constitutional law matters.

In addition, he is a visitor to the National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi, and the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (from November 2024). He is still involved with the Indian Law Institute and was a member of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) for two terms.
Haryana's first
Justice Surya Kant will become the first Haryanan to occupy the nation's top judicial position when he takes the oath of office as Chief Justice. Additionally, his appointment will signal continuity in the seniority-based succession plan outlined in the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), which regulates appointments to the judiciary.
