On Saturday, Kerala's chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, publicly declared before the state assembly that extreme poverty has been eliminated in the state. Kerala is the first state in India to do so, according to the LDF government.
This comes after 64,006 families were classified as "extremely poor" by the state government's Extreme Poverty Alleviation Project, which was started in 2021. After that, these households benefited from a four-year experiment aimed at eradicating extreme poverty in the state.
In honour of the anniversary of Kerala's founding day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made the statement during a special session of the assembly on November 1.
The concept was conceived when an NITI Aayog study revealed that Kerala has the lowest poverty rate in India, at 0.7%, according to MB Rajesh, the minister for local self-governments.
During a news conference on October 22, Rajesh discussed how the accomplishment was made, saying, "We recognised that it was critical to reach out to this population, no matter how small, and meet their needs as part of a dedicated program." In order to find these families, ground-level surveys were conducted in the first phase utilising criteria such as livelihood, shelter, food, and health. According to the Hindustan Times, 1,03,099 people from 64,006 families were classified as extremely poor as a result of the surveys."Pure fraud" is what opposition phrases claim.
According to news agency PTI, the state's opposition, the Congress-led United Democratic Front, called the state government's assertions "pure fraud" and staged a walkout from the assembly.
The chief minister's remark, according to state assembly opposition leader V D Satheesan, was "pure fraud" and in "contempt" of House procedures.
"So, we cannot join in that and are completely boycotting the session," he stated.
In response to the opposition's objection, Chief Minister Vijayan stated that the UDF was using the word "fraud" to describe its own actions.
"All we say is what we can do. What we said has been put into action. "That's our response to the leader of the opposition," he remarked.
