India's diplomatic operations in Canada start their month-long camps. This year's consulate camp will not be held in the Hindu temple in Canada that was brutally attacked by terrorists who support Khalistan last November.
On November 3, 2024, pro-Khalistan demonstrators stormed the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and took over the Hindu Sabha Mandir. Inderjeet Gosal, the main organiser of the secessionist organisation Sikhs for Justice's so-called Khalistan Referendum in Canada, was among the several people arrested as a result of that incident. Gosal faced assault charges.
The temple was hosting a consular camp on its grounds that day with representatives from India's Consulate in Toronto, which sparked the pro-Khalistan protest outside
The list of 25 temples, gurdwaras, civic halls, and other locations for the camps this year that was made public by the Indian High Commission in Ottawa did not include the mandir.
Commencing on Saturday, the consular camps will remain open until November 30 in order to provide life certificates to retirees near their place of abode.
A sizable contingent of local police averted any disturbances during protests at the temples in the GTA that hosted the camps this past weekend. The Hindu Heritage Centre in Mississauga and the Bharat Mata Mandir in Brampton served as the GTA's locations. Among those who took part in the demonstration was Gosal.
The Khalsa Diwan Society's historic Ross Street Gurdwara in Vancouver also hosted a camp on Saturday. "It was successful; 390 people received life certificates," stated Joginder Sunner, recording secretary for KDS. A court injunction prohibiting protesters from congregating within 100 meters of the house of worship was secured by the gurdwara.
Over the weekend, retirees at the four camps received around 2,200 life certificates, according to the Indian Consulate in Toronto.
Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford, and Prince George in British Columbia; Regina and Saskatoon in Saskatchewan; Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta; Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, London, Windsor, Kitchener, and Oakville in Ontario; and Halifax in Nova Scotia will all be covered by the camps.
