Odisha disrupted by 8-hour NNKS bandh over paddy procurement, smart meters, PUCC fine

The Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) held an eight-hour statewide bandh on Wednesday to demand the fulfillment of three major demands pertaining to public utilities and agriculture, disrupting daily life in Odisha.
The farmers' organization ordered the closure in protest of what it claimed arbitrary energy rate practices by Tata Power, the imposition of large fines for pollution certificates, and purported anomalies in the procurement of paddy.
Beginning around six in the morning, NNKS activists blocked key roads, set fire to tires in some locations, and staged picketing in Bhubaneswar and numerous other regions of the state, severely disrupting traffic flow.

Emergency and medical services, among other vital services, were not affected by the bandh despite the shutdown.
Due to numerous private buses staying off the roads in anticipation of the bandh, public transportation was partially impacted, with bus services halted in various areas, including Cuttack. At large bus terminals, commuters experienced inconvenience.
"I have to return to Kendrapara, but the Netaji Bus Terminal is empty. I didn't know about the bandh. A traveler who was stuck said, "I have no choice but to wait."
The bandh received support from the Odisha Congress. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) showed support for the demonstrators during a press conference, although it refrained from officially endorsing the shutdown. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on the other hand, disregarded the bandh and referred to it as a "fake farmers' movement."

To avoid any unfavorable events, security measures were strengthened at key locations throughout the state. The bandh will continue until 2:00 pm, according to the NNKS.
