Pradyut Bordoloi, a senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP, resigned from the party on Thursday, sparking rumors that he may soon join the BJP. In a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi expressed "overwhelming sadness" at his decision to leave the party.
The resignation is a significant political development ahead of the Assam assembly elections, coming only days after former Assam Congress chairman Bhupen Kumar Borah left the party, creating new concerns about the party's functioning under state unit president Gaurav Gogoi.

Bordoloi had informed the party leadership that he would resign if Lahorighat MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar was renominated in the assembly election.
Bordoloi wrote to Congress national secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, expressing "pain and anguish" over the party leadership's unwillingness to confront serious allegations against Nazar.
The Nagaon MP mentioned an Assam Police probe that resulted in the arrest and chargesheeting of Emdadul Islam, whom he described as Nazar's close acquaintance.Bordoloi claimed that Islam was involved in a violent attack on him and his associate Sibamoni Bora in April 2025 at Dumdumia in Dhing, in which approximately 20 armed people allegedly participated.
After being granted bail, the accused received what Bordoloi described as a "hero's welcome" organized by Nazar. He claimed Islam was thereafter taken to Gaurav Gogoi's house and feted at a function on January 11, and was seen sitting behind Gogoi and Nazar at a party programme in Morigaon the next day.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had openly encouraged Bordoloi to join the BJP prior to his resignation.

Sarma told reporters that he had not personally met the Congress leader, but he suspected Bordoloi might not see the need to continue in the party. He stated that the BJP would treat Bordoloi with the same respect it had shown to Bhupen Kumar Borah.
Prateek Bordoloi, Bordoloi's son, is set to run as a Congress candidate in the 2018 assembly elections from the Margherita constituency.
