After suffering an injury during Sunday's (October 26) last league match against Bangladesh, India's opener Pratika Rawal has been ruled out of the current ICC Women's World Cup 2025.
During the rain-affected game at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai, Rawal stumbled and fell awkwardly while fielding close to the boundary ropes. She squirmed in agony as the team's support crew assisted her off the field, and she didn't come back to open the chase or play the rest of India's bowling innings in the game that was finally called off.
The 25-year-old had scans after the game was cancelled, and at the time of reporting, she was supposed to see an impartial physician for her official results.
India suffers a serious setback ahead of their semifinal matchup with Australia on Thursday, October 30, at the same location. Rawal has had an incredible first season in international cricket since making his debut for India in December 2024. At the same location, she scored her first World Cup century in the previous match against New Zealand. She was on the verge of becoming just the second player to reach 1000 runs in a calendar year, and she also became the joint-fastest woman to get 1000 runs in women's ODIs.
India is also concerned about the health of keeper-bat Richa Ghosh, who was rested for the Bangladesh match after suffering a finger injury in the New Zealand match, making backup 'keeper Uma Chetry debut.
Rain significantly affected the final game at Navi Mumbai. The first period began around toss time, delaying the start of the 43-overs-a-side match by two hours. Just 12.2 overs into Bangladesh's innings, the second rain break occurred, cutting the play to 27 overs per side for 2.5 hours.
Even though the venue has a decent drainage system, there were large puddles on exposed areas of the inside and offside field during both rain breaks because only the main square and the extended areas at each end of the wicket were covered. When Rawal tried to turn back after overrunning to save a potential boundary, her right foot became stuck in the turf and she tumbled while running towards deep mid-wicket.
