Puri Rath Yatra 2025: 200 craftspeople building chariots with 26 wheels attached to wooden axles

The construction of the iconic chariots for the annual Rath Yatra of Srimandir is progressing steadily in Puri with as many as 200 artisans, including 78 Maharana Sevaks (carpenter servitors), being engaged in this sacred task.

On the occasion of the 'Bhaunri' festival held on Monday, 26 wheels of the three chariots were ceremonially fitted with wooden axles after a special puja, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing work.

Bhaunri Festival Marks Key Milestone

The 'Bhaunri' festival, celebrated on the 19th day of the chariot construction process, was observed with religious fervour. The process began on April 30, coinciding with Akshaya Tritiya, a day considered highly auspicious in the Jagannath tradition.

SJTA Chief Expresses Satisfaction

SJTA chief administrative officer Arabinda Padheee said, “One can see how the chariots are being made organically by many servitors and other stakeholders. This is literally the quintessential essence of the intangible heritage of the Jagannath culture. The entire process is progressing well."

He visited the ‘Rath Khala’, where the chariots are being constructed, near the Puri’s titular king’s palace.

“Three chariots- Nandighosh of Lord Jagannath, Taladwaja of Lord Balabhadra and Darpa Dalan of Devi Subhadra stand separately on the Rath Khala,” said Bijay Mohapatra, the chief carpenter of Lord Jagannath’s Nandighosh chariot.

This is a major festival in Puri for which the police have made adequate security arrangements, a senior SJTA officer said.

This year, the annual Rath Yatra is scheduled to be held on June 27.
