Following his team's six-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, bowler Raghu Sharma of the Mumbai Indians (MI) described his first Indian Premier League (IPL) wicket as a dream-come-true moment, sharing details of his arduous and emotional journey to the major stage. In a high-scoring match, Raghu concluded with stats of 4-0-36-1 as the Mumbai Indians, led by Ryan Rickelton (83) and Rohit Sharma (84), chased down a formidable 229-run target in 18.4 overs to secure a vital victory and maintain their tenuous playoff prospects.
But after years of dedication, Raghu's first IPL wicket was a personal turning point for him that evening.
"Getting my first IPL wicket is a dream come true for me. I want to start by expressing my gratitude to my parents for their support, as well as to Shri Shyam Das, my spiritual guru. "I recently joined this platform," he stated in an IPL on X video. I was there to say that I would absolutely put that out if I took the wicket. It's been a difficult fifteen years for me, so I just want to thank the Mumbai Indians," he continued.
Raghu also gave the team credit for supporting him during his journey, which started far from the road of professional cricket.
"I'm really appreciative of this franchise for their belief in me, support, and encouragement.Looking back on his unusual journey, Raghu revealed that he was a latecomer to cricket and had to overcome a number of obstacles, such as misgivings from his family and fitness issues.
"I began at age 21. I had previously done all age-group cricket, but I wasn't going to give up. I was not very fit at 102 kg, but I put in a lot of effort. He said, "I felt like I could do this when I saw Dhoni sir hit that six (in 2011)."
"My father told me that you are not fit enough to play cricket, so you can't do it." But I continued to work hard and maintain my focus," he continued. In IPL 2025, Raghu replaced Vignesh Puthur, although he was not able to play a game during the season. On Saturday, he made his debut against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), however he didn't take any wickets.
"All I want to convey is that age is not a number. You need to be extremely strong mentally and diligent if you want to prepare on a platform like the IPL. At this stage, maturity is more important than talents, he stated.
Now that he has taken his first wicket, Raghu will try to build on the success and make more contributions as the Mumbai Indians try to turn their season around.
