On Wednesday, Congressman Rahul Gandhi's allegation of "vote chori" in Haryana unexpectedly turned to Brazil. The Leader of the Opposition displayed a picture of a lady he said was a Brazilian model and said that it had been "used 22 times" under the names Saraswati, Sweety, and Seema on Haryana's voter records.
The Brazilian model was mentioned by Rahul Gandhi, which led to a huge internet search for her.
"Who is this woman? What's her name? What is her origins? In the news conference named "H Files" on Thursday, the Congress leader questioned, "But she votes 22 times in Haryana, at 10 different booths, and has multiple names."
Gandhi claimed during the Delhi news conference that the picture was "proof" of widespread electoral fraud, which he claimed prevented the Congress from winning the 2024 Haryana assembly election.
The Congress leader claimed that the image featured more than once in the Rai assembly constituency's voter lists and called it a "centralised operation" to rig the results.
Rahul Gandhi added that "Matheus Ferrero" could be linked to the same image on the internet.
Ferrero is a Brazilian photographer whose portraits and fashion photos are readily available on Unsplash, according to a separate Google search.
The startled response of the Brazilian model
However, a few hours later, a woman who claimed to be the one whose photo was used made an appearance online in a video responding to the incident.
She asserted that the photo displayed during Gandhi's news conference was taken when she was "about 20-years-old."
The woman in the video was recognised as Larissa Nery using a reverse image search. Later, she uploaded screenshots of her video circulating on "X" to her Instagram story.
An AI-generated translation of the woman's comments in the video indicated that, while speaking in Portuguese, she seemed astonished as she responded to accusations that her name had been used improperly in the purported scam.
"Folks, let me tell you the gossip," she said in jest. You're laughing too much, don't you? I'll share the rumours. People, they're utilising one of my old pictures. Alright, my picture is ancient.
Look, that picture shows me at a very young age. I must have been between 20 and 18 years old.
"I'm not sure if this is an election or anything where you have to cast a ballot, but they are using a picture of me to run. And in India, they are using my image as an Indian woman to con people.
"What insanity is this?"
Larissa, who was obviously taken aback by the attention, revealed that after the matter came to light, media began contacting her. "How crazy, my god." She added that a journalist had even gotten in touch with the salon where she works. "What madness is this, what world are we living in?" she exclaimed.
Then I got a call from a reporter who was curious about this. He wanted to speak with me for an interview, so he called the salon where I work. So I didn't respond. "The guy called me on Instagram after finding my account," she continued.
Larissa claimed to have received the viral photo from a friend in a different place and to have been inundated with messages.
Online searches indicate that Matheus Ferrero, a Brazilian photographer, took numerous portraits, including Larissa's. Since then, screenshots of her video and responses have gone viral.
