Review of the film Mardaani 3: Even with well-known brands, the main challenge is the blight of familiarity: how can you create distinction when the main character and their profession are the same? Rani Mukerji is back for a third round of Mardaani, and her stubborn cop Shivani Shivaji Roy pitted against a new group of foes, we are left racing to locate new rhythms.
This time, pre-pubescent girls from underprivileged homes are being picked up by the goons of the fearsome human trafficker Amma (Mallika Prasad). That is definitely different. A kidnapping incident in a small Uttar Pradesh village has repercussions in Delhi; the girl's father is a high-ranking official, and the police are ordered to take strong action.
Armed with her devoted assistants, one of whom is a young woman (Janki Bodiwala) struggling to make sense of a male-dominated job, Shivani arrives. Another important figure is a young man (Prajesh Kashyap) who has been in charge of locking up some of the bad guys and whose NGO's declared goal is to save street children. Jisshu Sengupta returns as Shivani's incredibly helpful husband, who doesn't mind preparing supper while she is out on business.
which, like the first two installments published in 2015 and 2019, is centered on saving young ladies from worse outcomes than death.
Since Roy is the protagonist of this Yash Raj-produced project, it makes sense that no other character can be larger than her, which has both positive and negative aspects. Because Mukerji is a strong actor, we follow her as she takes the lead and everyone else follows in her wake. The degree of overwriting and predictable story lines, however, are beyond her control. When a character says something like "aap rath chalao, aur mujhe saarthi banne do," or similar phrases, we can tell exactly where this is headed, just as we do when characters who seem too good to be true appear.
It's okay that Shivani gets to give the required speech about how women and girls are always victims and that there will always be courageous people who come to their aid, but the desire to put Mukerji front and center—literally in multiple scenes—dulls the entire endeavor.
Rani Mukerji, Janki Bodiwala, Mallika Prasad, Prajesh Kashyap, and Jisshu Sengupta are among the cast members of Mardaani 3. Abhiraj Minawala is the film's director.
