Safety concerns cause Sri Lankan star to leave PSL and join GT for IPL 2025

Amid safety concerns, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis has opted out of the remainder of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025.

As per sources, the right-handed batsman has signed with the Gujarat Titans (GT) as a replacement for England batter Jos Buttler for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs.

Mendis was playing for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League. As per reports, he played his final game for the franchise on May 7.

PSL was suspended due to tensions between India and Pakistan. However, the tournament will resume on Saturday, May 17, with the final match scheduled for May 25.

As per GT sources, Mendis is all set to make his IPL debut for the franchise in the playoffs. He has been signed as a replacement for Jos Buttler. Buttler will leave the tournament after the league stage to join England's white-ball squad for their ODI series against the West Indies.

Notably, GT have brought in Mendis for Rs 75 lakh. He will be available for selection if the team qualifies for the playoffs, which  will begin on May 29.

Mendis has played 78 T20Is for Sri Lanka, in which he has garnered a total of 1920 runs with an average of 25.60 and strike rate of 131.68.
