Rebel militants in the Darfur region of Sudan have reportedly kidnapped a young guy from the Jagatsinghpur district. The victim, identified as Adarsh Behera, reportedly came from Kotakana village, which is under the jurisdiction of Tirtol police, and had been employed in Sudan for three years.
A video and an audio clip given by the captors provided the family with disturbing proof of his kidnapping, which caused worldwide alarm and sparked calls for his recovery.
Captured As the Civil War intensifies
Adarsh was employed by a private construction company in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur State, which is heavily impacted by the continuing civil war in Sudan between the national army and paramilitary groups, according to sources who spoke with his family.
According to reports, the company halted operations for a few weeks because of the worsening security situation.
However, Adarsh's boss reportedly requested him to come to the office for normal duties around a week ago. Armed rebels thought to be associated with one of the factions participating in the Darfur crisis kidnapped him during this visit.
According to family members, the abductors subsequently posted a brief video of Adarsh in captivity and an audio message in Hindi that was allegedly produced under duress. Adarsh can be heard in the video stating that the rebels have taken his phone and possessions and that he won't be allowed to leave until the government or humanitarian community steps in.
A Family's Urgent Request From Jagatsinghpur
The family of Adarsha is in a state of turmoil following the news of the kidnapping. Khetrabasi Behera, his father, sobbed as he described how they found out his kid was being kept captive in a foreign battle zone.
We learnt that he was unable to return because of a war that was going on in that nation. We then learnt that terrorists had abducted him. Eight days have passed, and we still haven't heard from him or learnt anything about his health. We want the government of Odisha to return him to his homeland," Khetrabasi stated.
Sasmita Behera, Adarsh's wife, also recounted her husband's taped message, in which he makes a direct plea for assistance from Indian authorities.
"My phone and possessions have been seized. They would free me if the Indian government, the Red Cross, or Odisha made a request. They haven't made any ransom demands. According to the audio message, Adarsh stated, "I would request that the Modi and Mohan Majhi governments evacuate me."
Since then, the family's house in Kotakana hamlet has become a meeting place for worried neighbours and family members. While the family has received sympathy from the local community and panchayat leaders, Adarsh's wife and child are reportedly in shock.
Embassy Notified, Government Communication Started
According to sources, the Indian Embassy in Sudan has been notified of the family's request and is keeping an eye on the issue given the continued unrest in the Darfur region.
The Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Odisha Chief Minister's Office have also been informed about the event, according to sources in the Jagatsinghpur administration. In order to confirm the veracity of the kidnapping video and track down the victim via local contacts, diplomatic channels are being opened.
Coordination of rescue efforts is difficult due to the unstable security situation in Sudan, where communication channels are still broken.
According to officials, the embassy has asked foreign humanitarian organisations working in the region, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), for help in confirming the whereabouts of Indian citizens who are allegedly ensnared in the fighting.
