A local passenger train and a freight train crashed on Tuesday near the Bilaspur station in Chhattisgarh, resulting in 11 fatalities and 20 injuries. The disaster was so bad that one train's coach wound up on top of another's waggon.
The MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) passenger train collided with a goods train from behind at approximately 4 p.m. while travelling from Gevra to Bilaspur in the nearby Korba district.
A railway official with knowledge of the situation informed HT that a passenger train coach landed up on top of a cargo train waggon upon impact. The train's loco pilot was one among the dead, and the female assistant loco pilot was hurt in the collision.
A survivor describes the terror before and after the incident.
Sanjeev Vishwakarma, a 35-year-old passenger on the Gevra Road-Bilaspur train, told the PTI news agency that he was looking through his phone just before the crash, while other passengers were sleeping or engaged in conversation.
But in a matter of seconds, the train's compartments were filled with panic, windows broke, and metal shrieked.
The train abruptly shook strongly and collided with something about 500 meters after departing Gatora. People's shouts followed the tremendous roar. Then everything became dark," recalled Vishwakarma, a Bilha (Bilaspur) native, as he lay on the hospital bed.Sitting in the first coach on his way back from his in-laws' home in Akaltara, Vishwakarma reported that there were "about 16-17 of passengers, including men, women, and children" in the compartment.
According to Vishwakarma, he was "pinned under the seat" when he opened his eyes after the crash. stating that his coach had scaled the cargo train.
"People were pleading for assistance... In front of me, I saw bodies. There were three fatalities, one of whom was a lady. I'm still haunted by their faces," Vishwakarma said to PTI.
"Thrown to the ground—everything happened in a matter of seconds"
Another traveler who had boarded the train from Champa stated that he had originally intended to take the Link Express train to Raipur.

I was unable to move my right leg because it was trapped. I was dragged out by railway workers, who then hurried me for medical attention. It everything took place in a matter of seconds, according to Sharma. He stated that lives could have been saved if the train had slowed down a bit.
