In addition to the deadly fog that blanketed the city on Friday morning, Delhi is struggling with the winter season. Over Delhi, the lowest temperatures were between 8 and 9 degrees Celsius.
Why is there a severe cold wave in India?
IMD had stated that the polar vortex will cause the cold in central, northwest, and northeastern India. A polar vortex is a sizable region of frigid, low-pressure air close to the poles of the Earth. In the winter, it gets stronger. Extreme cold is being experienced throughout due to the polar vortex and La Nina conditions.
If the minimum temperature is less than 10 degrees Celsius and at least 4.5 degrees below average, it is considered a cold wave. A cold wave is declared on the second day if this condition is present in at least two stations for at least two days in a row.
