The date of Bangladeshs first national election following Hasinas departure will be revealed today.

Bangladesh is scheduled to hold its first election after the Sheikh Hasina administration was overthrown in the July upheaval of 2024. The next national election date will be announced by the Bangladesh Election Commission on Thursday, according to a Reuters story.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has led an interim government in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in an insurrection in August 2024.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will announce the date of the Bangladesh elections in a national broadcast at 6 p.m. local time, according to senior Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, who was quoted by Reuters.

Wide-ranging reforms to state institutions are demanded under this charter, such as limiting presidential authority, bolstering the independence of the judiciary and electoral authorities, and stopping the abuse of law enforcement.
Elections in Bangladesh in 2026?
The head of the Bangladesh Election Commission, AMM Nasir Uddin, announced earlier in August that the national elections would take place during the first week of February 2026.
The head of the poll board stated that, given the widespread voter apathy and lack of confidence in the system, holding the polls will be extremely difficult.
At a function in the northwest Rangpur district, Nasir Uddin stated, "People have lost confidence in the election system, the Election Commission, and the administrative machinery involved in the electoral process," according to the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

Who is going to compete?
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia, is generally seen as the front-runner in the forthcoming elections. In addition, the Jamaat-e-Islami party has resumed electoral campaigning following the relaxation of limitations by the interim administration.
Following a 2013 court decision that Jamaat's registration as a political party violated the nation's secular constitution, the largest Islamic party in Bangladesh was barred from running for office.
The Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina, has been prohibited from running for office. But if the party's ban is not restored, her son has warned of nationwide turmoil.
