The selfless dedication of Umakanta Mahapatra at Nayagarh Hospital: From security guard to guardian angel

Umakanta Mahapatra, a security guard with nine years of experience, has emerged as a symbol of compassion and commitment at the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital in Odisha. In addition to his usual responsibilities, he helps patients, looks after the elderly, and helps the poor, winning the community's respect and motivating young people in the area to give selflessly to society.
According to reports, Mahapatra frequently assists with basic patient care and supports senior citizens who are hospitalised. He makes certain that people in need get the care and support they require. Even though he works as a security guard, he helps the poor and arranges for the cremation of unclaimed dead.

Speaking about his experience, Mahapatra stated, "I have continued to help and assist anyone in need during my nine years of work." Humans and animals alike are meant to be supported, in my opinion. I have assisted patients during the COVID-19 pandemic when others were reluctant to approach them, and I have cremated numerous homeless people who had no one to administer their final rites.

He also assists cattle and stray animals that are discovered close to the highways.
Collective Social Initiative Debaduta Seva Parishad was established in Nayagarh as a result of Mahapattra's efforts. The organisation now has a number of young people from the area who take part in social service projects, demonstrating a methodical approach to volunteerism and community support.

A volunteer from the organisation stated, “We also work to protect animals. When we find stranded cattle, we move them off the road and feed them when required.”
