The Berhampur police detained former MLA and Ganjam BJD President Bikram Panda on Wednesday for his alleged participation in the murder case of Pitabas Panda, a prominent counsel and BJP politician. This is a significant development in the investigation.
Twelve persons have reportedly been arrested in relation to the case thus far. They include two sharpshooters, a local shooter, student leader Madan Dalei, corporator Malay Bisoi, former Berhampur Mayor Siba Shankar Das, also known as Pintu Das, and an individual who watched over the advocate.
As the investigation goes on, more arrests related to the case are anticipated, according to sources.
According to reports, police have questioned about 100 people and reviewed more than 70 CCTV tape clips as part of a thorough investigation that looks at the case from several perspectives.
Late last night, a police team led by Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M arrived at Panda's home and arrested him so they could question him.
Panda was then taken into custody and brought to the Berhampur court on Wednesday.
Notably, on the eve of Kumar Purnima, one of Berhampur's most cherished holidays, Pitabas Panda was killed on October 6.
Political and commercial competition are thought to be the primary causes of the murder, while the exact motive is still unknown.
In a news conference later today, Berhampur police are anticipated to disclose the precise reason for the homicide.
