Before perpetrating the crime, the three guys who were detained for sexually assaulting a college student in the vicinity of Coimbatore airport in Tamil Nadu had stolen a two-wheeler and had drunk alcohol.
The three accused, named as Satish alias Karuppsamy, his brother Karthi alias Kalishewaran, and their relative Guna alias Thavasi, were reported to have been arrested by Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Saravana Sundar. According to Sundar, who was quoted by news agency PTI, they were apprehended late on Monday after the accused attempted to assault the police team that was looking for them.
Following the arrest, MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, gave the police a month to prepare a chargesheet and obtain the harshest penalty possible. He called the college student's sexual assault "inhumane" and said that such "heinous crimes" could not be condemned with harsh words alone.
Labourers Satish (30), Karthi (21), and Guna (20) were employed in a lathe unit when they robbed a two-wheeler while intoxicated. After robbing a two-wheeler and drinking beer, the three were passing by the airport when they spotted the woman and her friend inside a car. They then sexually assaulted the student, the PTI report stated. This was the conclusion of an initial investigation.
The accused were also mentioned in ongoing criminal proceedings, including theft and murder, according to the probe. The trio were attending court in connection with a murder case.
The Commissioner further mentioned that police had filed a gang rape case against the three defendants.
What took place on Sunday?
The three suspects noticed the college student and her male acquaintance inside a car. They went up to the automobile and used stones to smash the glass.
The acquaintance was slashed by the accused, which caused him to lose consciousness. According to an NDTV report, the male buddy was hit with a sickle.
The victim was then sexually abused by the three after they had pulled her to an unlit, secluded area.
The student and her companion were talking in the car when the three robbed a two-wheeler on the evening of November 2 while driving on the mud road close to the airport, the Commissioner stated.
Around 11:20 p.m., her buddy called the police control centre after regaining consciousness, and a team then showed up at the scene. Commissioner Sundar stated that after the woman left the scene of the crime, she was transported to the hospital, according to PTI.
He added that the survivor was receiving psychiatric counselling and was not in danger.
How did the accused get caught?
According to City Police Commissioner A Saravana Sundar, investigators reviewed over 300 CCTV clips and verified them using user-submitted information.
Authorities were able to identify the individuals and determine their escape path. in approximately 10:40 p.m. on Monday, police located the three in their hiding place in Vellakinaru.
The policemen had to use the least amount of force to subdue the accused after they fought them when a police team arrived to apprehend them. The three were shot below the knees by police.
The Commissioner stated that when the three attacked the team, a police policeman was also hurt.
According to an official quoted by the news agency, police opened fire, wounding two of the accused in both legs and shooting one of them in one leg.
Together with the wounded constable, all of the accused are sent to a government hospital for medical care.
