Vinesh Phogat says he will return to pursue his Olympic dreams.

In 2028, Vinesh Phogat will return to the mat in an attempt to realise her Olympic goal in Los Angeles (LA28). After being dramatically disqualified from the Paris Olympics on the day of her final, the two-time world champion announced her retirement.

On the morning of her gold medal match against Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States, Phogat—who had made waves the day before defeating Tokyo Olympics champion Yui Susaki in the 50kg weight class—was discovered to be overweight during the weigh-in.
Phogat returned from her third Olympics with nothing after being disqualified according to the regulations. She subsequently said that she would no longer be wrestling.

Phogat stated on Friday that she would walk onto the mat with a spirit that would not bow because the fire is still burning within her. "People questioned whether Paris marked the end." I didn't know the answer for a very long time. I had to get away from the mat, the strain, the demands, and even my own goals. I let myself breathe for the first time in years," Phogat posted on Instagram.
"I took some time to comprehend the significance of my journey, including the highs, heartbreaks, sacrifices, and unseen versions of myself." I discovered the truth in that contemplation: I still adore this sport. I'm still interested in competing.

"So here I am, returning to LA28 with an unwavering spirit and an unafraid heart. The 31-year-old added, "And this time, I'm not walking alone; my son is joining my team, my biggest motivator, my little cheerleader on this road to the LA Olympics."
Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Phogat spearheaded demonstrations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India at the time, in 2023.

She also appealed her disqualification to the Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS), but she was not granted a positive ruling. Phogat went into politics and joined Congress following the Olympics in Paris. In the 2024 Haryana state elections, she was elected to the Julana assembly constituency.Phogat is one of India's most accomplished wrestlers and a three-time Olympian. She won bronze at the World Championships in 2019 and 2022, gold at the Asian Games in 2018 and bronze in 2014, three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, and several medals at the Asian Championships, including gold in 2021. She has failed to win an Olympic medal three times.
