The man who attempted to assassinate former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah at point-blank range on Wednesday informed the police that he had waited 20 years for the opportunity to do it. He confessed the attack was motivated by a "personal agenda".
The incident occurred at a wedding in Jammu, with recordings showing the 63-year-old attacker Kamal Singh Jamwal approaching Z+ security protectee Abdullah and firing a shot from his personal licensed firearm. His shot missed the mark, and he was swiftly overpowered by National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, resulting in a miraculous escape for the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president.
When a police officer inquired why he wanted to kill Abdullah, the accused replied, "Today I had the opportunity to kill him, but he did not kill; he survived." The officer asked him again why he wanted to kill Abdullah. "I had my own mission," was the response.
People assaulted Jamwal and subsequently took him into custody. He was later observed sitting quietly in a chair, telling the police about his past.
Rakesh Singh, an eyewitness, told PTI that Jamwal claimed to be the chairman of an obscure 'Jagran Manch'. The accused said that he lived off the rent from three shops he owned.
Abdullah was joined by J&K deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary and Nasir Sogami, the Chief Minister's advisor, during the wedding of party leader BS Chouhan's daughter in Jammu. Sogami said that it was an effort to kill Farooq Abdullah, but God was merciful in that no one was harmed in the firing. He stated that they do not know the purpose for the assassination attempt or whether it was a security lapse.
The pistol used in the crime was confiscated from the accused's possession.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated, "Allah is merciful. My father had a particularly close shave. The circumstances are vague at the time, but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to approach point blank range and fire a shot.""Only the close protection team deflected the shot, ensuring that the assassination attempt failed. There are currently more questions than answers, like how someone was able to reach this close to a Z+. "NSG protected the former CM," he wrote in an X post.
