What did the US vice president actually say when he made a comment about Ushas faith as a Hindu wife that caused a stir?

US vice president JD Vance's comments about his Hindu wife, Usha Vance, in which he expressed his hope that she would eventually convert to Christianity, have sparked a huge scandal. Following the criticism, Vance made it clear that he supports his wife's choice and that she has no aspirations to convert.
The opening remarks were delivered by JD Vance on Wednesday at a Turning Point USA event held at the University of Mississippi. He had been asked about his beliefs, his interfaith marriage to Usha, and the immigration policy of the Trump administration by a young woman who was presumably of South Asian heritage.

The controversial statements made by JD Vance
Vance replied to her that Usha usually joins him at church on Sundays. But his subsequent remarks caused a rift.
Do I hope that she will someday be moved by the same thing that affected me in church, as I have told her, publicly said, and will repeat tonight in front of 10,000 of my closest friends? Indeed, I sincerely hope so, as I hold to the Christian faith, and I hope my wife will someday share my beliefs," he stated.
But if she doesn't, then God says that everyone has free will, so that doesn't bother me," Vance continued.Vance further said in his response that he and Usha even go to a Christian school and have made the decision to raise their three children as Christians.
After criticism, Vance clarifies
The US vice president's comments caused a stir since they were characterised as an example of religious entitlement and accused Vance of being insensitive to his wife's Hindu identity.
A few days following the altercation, Vance took to X to directly address the topic, explaining that he respects Usha's decision and that she has no aspirations to convert.
Although she is not a Christian and has no intention of becoming one, like many others in interfaith marriages or relationships, I hope that she will eventually share my viewpoint.
