What Shashi Tharoor Told NDTV When Asked "Who Will Be Kerala Chief Minister?"

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed optimism that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) would create a comfortable majority government as vote counting in the Kerala Assembly elections on April 9 continued. He claimed that the electorate had definitely opted for change.
"They have voted decisively for change, even when individual ministers or MLAs of the ruling front may have been popular," Tharoor said in an interview with NDTV. Voters have rejected them because they understand that supporting them will only result in more bad government. That's a fantastic indication of the electorate's maturity, and I believe we have every reason to believe that the outcome is better than anticipated and that a comfortable majority administration should be formed here."

The Congress-led UDF was leading by a significant margin in the first two hours of counting. According to reports, the UDF was leading in more than 90 seats, the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPI(M), in less than 50 seats, and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, in about 5 seats.
When asked who would be the next chief minister of Kerala, Tharoor replied, "Look, I mean the honest answer is that I have no clue because the truth is the way it works in our party is that you will actually have a consultation amongst the victorious MLAs by a representative, the Congress president, and then you will find the high command making the final decision. ... the fact that we have an abundance of talent is a good sign."

Tharoor went on to say that obtaining what he called a historic majority was more important than simply becoming the government, as the UDF had anticipated. He stated that the party was anticipating confirmation of a "amazing result" and pointed out that the UDF was leading in 99 seats, a level of performance that had not happened in a very long time. It's not just about establishing the government, which is what we were anticipating anyhow. We're now leading in 99 seats, which is a historic majority that hasn't happened in a very long time. When this is verified, we're really looking forward to an incredible outcome.

Tharoor told NDTV, "We understand that not even half of the rounds are finished, so it will take some time. Yes, the signs are unmistakably the numbers."
According to Election Commission data, Congress led in 50 seats, followed by CPI (M) in 31, IUML in 17, CPI in 13, Kerala Congress (M) in 4, and the BJP, Kerala Congress (KEC), and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) in 3 seats apiece.
The UDF's prediction that it would win a sizable majority was validated by these trends.
On Saturday, veteran Congress politician PJ Kurien stated that only three candidates were being evaluated for the Chief Minister post, despite the fact that several members of the party were qualified if the UDF won. He did not identify the three people.

Kurien claimed that the Congress had an abundance of capable leaders, in contrast to the Left front. Whether they agreed with it or not, he emphasised that everyone in the party will accept the final decision on the Chief Minister.
