The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested a multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system and carried out the first flight testing of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range, significantly enhancing India's defence capabilities.
The research and development division of the defence ministry claims that three consecutive flight tests were carried out on June 10 and 11, 2026, demonstrating the nation's capacity to improve its medium-range anti-ship strike capability and counter long-range ballistic missile threats through a layered defence shield.

With interceptors successfully engaging their respective targets, the testing validated the multi-layered BMD system's operational efficacy. The system was created with state-of-the-art technologies to address new missile difficulties.The capabilities of multi-layered BMD was well proven. The interceptors were able to successfully engage their targets. The newest technologies are used in the systems' design and development to counter new missile threats.
According to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, "multi-layered BMD capability was successfully demonstrated," placing India in the select group of countries with BMD capabilities to engage up to Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICMBs). The interceptors were able to successfully engage their targets. In a post on X, he stated, "The systems are designed and developed with the latest technologies to address the emerging missile threats."

The first flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range proved anti-ship defence at medium range, placing India in an elite group of countries with ballistic missile defence capabilities to combat ballistic missiles up to ICBMs. The Union Minister continued, "Congratulations to DRDO on effectively showcasing these vital technologies."
To detect, track, and intercept hostile ballistic missiles, the BMD system is an integrated network of sophisticated radars, command centers, and interceptor missiles.
Only a few countries and military alliances, such as the US, Russia, Israel, and NATO, presently possess advanced ballistic missile defence capabilities. These alliances use layered defence systems to fend off a variety of aerial and missile threats.

DRDO completed the first flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM-MR) at a different milestone. The missile, which was launched from a naval platform, successfully exhibited accurate terminal engagement of maritime targets, low-altitude sea-skimming flight, and precision navigation.
