Torn apart by war Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, stated on Tuesday that his country is prepared to hold new elections as long as security can be guaranteed. This comes after Donald Trump, the president of the United States, stated in an interview on Monday that the conflict in Ukraine is being used as an excuse not to hold elections.
Zelensky told reporters, "I am prepared for the elections."
Due to its war with Russia, which has been going on for nearly four years, Ukraine is currently under martial law.
According to news agency AFP, Zelensky stated that Ukrainian MPs have been instructed to draft "proposals regarding the possibility of amending the legislative foundations and the law on elections during martial law."
He did, however, emphasize that elections could only take place if the nation's security could be guaranteed, and he publicly begged the United States and its European allies to assist them in conducting the polls.
"I am now asking, I declare this openly, for the United States of America to help me, possibly together with European colleagues, to ensure security for holding elections," he stated.
Zelensky's comments follow Trump's statement on Monday that he believed it was time to hold elections in Ukraine in an interview with Politico. Zelenskyy might prevail. I'm not sure who would prevail. However, it has been a while since they held an election.
"No legal right to give up territory"
Zelensky's comments on holding elections in Ukraine also coincide with growing pressure from the US to embrace a peace agreement the US has negotiated.
However, Ukraine and its supporters have perceived the US proposal as favoring Russia more, especially as it calls for ceding Ukraine's Donbas territory to Russia in exchange for security guarantees that do not include full NATO membership.
Zelensky met with a number of his European allies over the past several days to ask for their support and to develop a response to the US peace plan.
"We are actively working on every aspect of possible measures to put an end to the war. We are now prepared to introduce the more sophisticated Ukrainian and European components to our American partners. We anticipate moving quickly to make the possible steps as feasible as possible with the help of the United States," the president of Ukraine wrote in a post on Tuesday.
He continued, "We will be prepared to send the refined documents to the United States in the near future."
Additionally, he stated on Monday that the United States' initial 28-point plan to bring about peace in Ukraine was reduced to just 20 points following discussions with the country over the weekend.
Zelensky ruled rejected the prospect of giving up territory in exchange for peace, claiming that Ukrainian law, the constitution, and international law do not grant them the "legal" or "moral" authority to do so.
