New Delhi has taken the firing on two Indian ships by Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel very seriously and is taking diplomatic measures in this delicate matter. India has called the Iranian ambassador, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told him that India is really worried about this situation.
On April 18, the cargo ships flying the Indian flag were fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz. According to sources, the incident happened as a result of a communication breakdown between the local Revolutionary Guard unit and the Iranian leadership.
The Indian vessels did not suffer any significant damage during the firing. In some parts of the ships, glass panes were broken. However, 14 Indian-flagged ships are anchored in the Strait of Hormuz, making the situation delicate, according to reports. Additionally, a considerable number of Indian people are now in Iran, and New Delhi places a high priority on their safety, according to Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, today.
"On receiving information regarding the firing incident, the Indian government took serious diplomatic initiatives in the matter," he said, describing the ambassador's call. "We continue to communicate with Iranian authorities on a regular basis for the security of Indian ships. In order to guarantee our ships' safe passage, we are constantly interacting with Iran," he continued.
Ten Indian-flagged LPG and oil tankers have been safely evacuated from the Middle East since the unrest began on February 28.
Still, 14 Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. The government is stepping up its efforts to retrieve these, which include one major LPG tanker and three large oil tankers.
The captains of three ships in the Strait of Hormuz reported attacks on Saturday, April 18, according to the United Kingdom Maritime traffic Operations, a British organization that keeps an eye on maritime traffic. Among them were two cargo ships flying the Indian flag. The first strike, according to the report, was directed against an oil tanker flying the Indian flag.
Abruptly approaching the ship, two Iranian military gunboats fired on it without communicating or sending out any radio warnings. The ship and its crew, however, were unharmed.
Soon after, the Revolutionary Guards attacked another Indian ship. The assault happened close to Oman's coast. The UKMTO report states that an unidentified projectile struck this super-tanker.
