A 42-year-old New York woman is accused with smuggling Indian nationals into the United States via Canada. According to the PTI news agency, the woman, known as Stacey Taylor, has been charged with participating in a global smuggling scheme that smuggled people—mostly from India—illegally into the United States.
The Plattsburgh woman, who was charged by a federal grand jury in Albany in October, showed up for an arraignment earlier this week, according to an official statement.
According to court documents reported by PTI, Taylor's car was pulled over by US Border Patrol agents early in January in Churubusco, New York, close to the Quebec border.
As recently as September of this year, Taylor was also linked to a smuggling scheme following her January arrest.
Three Indian nationals and one Canadian national were among the four foreign nationals discovered inside the woman's car when it was halted by border patrol authorities in January. Without being checked, the four had unlawfully crossed the US-Canada border.
In the course of the investigation, law enforcement officers examined Taylor's cellphone and found text messages that suggested she had engaged in several additional smuggling operations before being apprehended.
According to the indictment, Taylor was then accused with four counts of alien smuggling for profit and collaborating with others to engage in alien smuggling. Three of these counts were second or subsequent offenses.
Taylor could get a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for each count of alien smuggling for profit if the indictment is found to be true.
Additionally, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti of the Justice Department's Criminal Division stated in the statement that she might be given more time for second and future offenses.
