Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese became the nation's first leader to marry while in office on Saturday when he wed his longtime partner Jodie Haydon. In a private ceremony held in the lawn of his official Canberra home, The Lodge, the 62-year-old leader wed the 46-year-old financial services employee.
"We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends," Albanese said in a statement. In a one-word social media post, the prime leader shared a video of himself wearing a bow tie and clutching the hand of his happy wife, who was wearing a long white gown while confetti dropped all around them.
More than a year had passed since Albanese's Valentine's Day 2024 proposal, in which he declared he had met a spouse "who I want to spend the rest of my life with." According to AFP, they were married by a celebrant after writing their own vows.
