After a report from the Forensic Science Laboratory revealed that an anaesthetic chemical was found in his wife's organs six months after she died, Mahendra Reddy, a 31-year-old general surgeon, was taken into custody for the alleged murder of his wife, a doctor, in Bengaluru.
Thanks to her sister's perseverance, the case that was first thought to be a case of natural death was eventually transformed into a murder inquiry.
The victim's sister's scepticism leads to an investigation into "natural" death.
An elder sister's investigation revealed what the police believe to be a well-planned murder. Dermatologist Dr. Kruthika M. Reddy, 29, was taken to Cauvery Hospital on April 24 while unconscious and pronounced dead. Her doctors and family believed she had died of natural causes.
However, radiologist Dr. Nikitha M. Reddy, her sister, wasn't persuaded. The hospital filed a Medico Legal Case (MLC) with Marathahalli police, who filed a case of unnatural death, as a result of Nikitha Reddy's insistence on understanding the cause of death. According to the story, months later, her intuition was correct.
Lethal substance found in victim's body according to forensic findings
According to an FSL forensic analysis, Kruthika Reddy's organs and medical equipment purportedly used by her husband, Mahendra Reddy, contained evidence of Propofol, a controlled anaesthetic used exclusively in hospital procedures.
While treating Kruthika for "gastritis" at her parents' home between April 21 and 23, Mahendra reportedly gave her a lethal dose of Propofol, according to the Bengaluru Police.
He was taken into custody in the Udupi district's Manipal.
