Following promises from the Center, activist Sonam Wangchuk completed his 26-day hunger strike on Thursday night. At the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, Wangchuk broke the fast in front of senior Union Ministers Jitendra Singh and JP Nadda.
After a day of intense government negotiations, the breakthrough was made.
According to sources who spoke to NDTV, Home Minister Amit Shah met with Health Minister JP Nadda and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Dr. Jitendra Singh for four hours as student protests grew more intense and worries about Sonam Wangchuk's health increased.
According to insiders, the administration made the decision to prioritize Sonam Wangchuk's health and well-being while responding positively to his demands.

As instructed by the Home Minister, Dr. Jitendra Singh called with Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of Sonam Wangchuk, and reassured her that the government was dedicated to resolving the activist's issues.
Additionally, he asked Angmo to persuade Wangchuk to put an end to his hunger strike.Wangchuk was personally given the government's assurance letter by JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh when they met him at Medanta Hospital later that evening.
According to sources, the Union Ministers also communicated that, as part of the engagement process, the government will invite the CJP delegation to discussions on Friday at a neutral location.
The CJP leadership insisted on holding talks at Jantar Mantar or a neutral location on Thursday, rejecting the Center's invitation to have talks at JP Nadda's home or office.Sonam Wangchuk also called for a discussion between the Center and the demonstrators.
According to additional sources, Wangchuk received assurances during the conversation that a new bill within the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) framework will be presented in Parliament the following week. Cabinet ratification of the idea is anticipated today.
The administration has also stated that it is prepared to comply with other demands, such as refraining from taking legal action against students who are protesting.
"The government is positive on not registering cases against those protesting peacefully at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and those who participated in the march to Parliament on July 20, 2026," Nadda stated while reading Wangchuk the government's promises in front of his wife Gitanjali Angmo and other hospital staff.

The Union Health Minister added that the administration had already promised to have talks about exam education changes and paper leaks in Parliament.In addition, Nadda mentioned another demand made by Sonam Wangchuk: "The government is also favorably considering appropriate compensation for the suicide victims of the recent NEET paper leaks."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X after Wangchuk declared the end of his hunger strike, saying, "I urge Sonam ji to follow his daily routine as advised by the doctors and regain his weight as soon as possible.""I ask God to keep Sonam ji well," the prime minister continued.Sonam Wangchuk said he wanted to go back to Ladakh after breaking his fast.
Sources claim that Wangchuk also promised the visiting ministers that he would interact with students and movement supporters prior to his return to Ladakh.
According to sources who spoke to NDTV, he would advise students to keep their faith in the government's promises and make sure that people taking part in the nonviolent protest are not swayed by "anti-social elements" that could weaken the cause.
Additionally, Wangchuk gave the administration his word that he would keep pushing for constructive and nonviolent participation while urging demonstrators to exercise patience while the dialogue process proceeds.
