On undeveloped defence land in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, the Defence Ministry has approved the construction of a 250 MW solar power project with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This is the first large-scale renewable energy project of its kind to be developed on defense-owned land in India.
The project, approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will be built on about 850 acres of land in the former Sitapur Cantonment area. It is anticipated to lower long-term power procurement costs while enhancing energy security for military installations.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) claims that the solar-plus-storage project is a component of a larger initiative to assist the government's clean energy ambitions and make better use of unused defence territory.

In order to secure the best energy pricing for defence sites, state-run power producer NTPC Limited has been entrusted with carrying out the project through a competitive bidding process. The Directorate General Defence Estates and the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) will work together to carry out the project.
According to the government, the project combines goals for sustainability, energy security, national security, and technological innovation. The Sitapur project is seen by officials as a test that may open the door for comparable energy storage and renewable energy projects on defence land throughout the nation.
When finished, the facility is anticipated to rank among India's biggest renewable energy projects built on defence property and may set the standard for upcoming solar-plus-storage projects in the defence industry.

To guarantee that the project is finished on time, the Defence Ministry, NTPC, Army headquarters, and the Directorate General Defence Estates will work together to oversee implementation.
