"Missed Rohit Sharma": A former Indian stars candid assessment of the Mumbai Indians IPL 2026 struggles

The Mumbai Indians (MI) are missing their great opener Rohit Sharma, who is now out due to a hamstring injury, according to former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra. The rest of the batting lineup must step up during significant run chases. MI's batting problems persisted as they suffered two collapses on Thursday at Wankhede Stadium while chasing 208 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They were initially reduced to 11/3 and then fell from 84/3 to 104 all out, marking their sixth defeat of the year. This is MI's third straight loss at a previously impregnable stronghold and their greatest home loss.

After scoring 19* in 13 balls against the reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Rohit walked out due to a hamstring problem. Since then, he has missed three games. Rohit has scored 137 runs at an average of 45.66 and a strike rate of over 165 in four games this season, including a fifty.
JioStar expert Aakash stated on Star Sports' Cricket Live that MI is having trouble controlling their bowling lineup's run leaks and finding solid starts during significant chases.

"Rohit Sharma has undoubtedly been missed. Chasing totals in the 210–220 range becomes quite challenging without good beginnings. Hardik Pandya (97 in six games at an average of 19.40 and a strike rate of over 140) and Suryakumar Yadav (156 runs in seven games at an average of 22.28 and a strike rate of 141, with a fifty) have not yet made enough of an impact. Although there have been some successes, such as Tilak Varma's century, the batting unit as a whole needs to improve. With the exception of Jasprit Bumrah, the majority of bowlers have been leaking runs. Ghazanfar has been reliable, but the others need to help him more," he stated.

However, JioStar analyst Kumble lauded CSK opener Sanju Samson's century, pointing out that the team's openers have been inconsistent over the previous few seasons while being crucial to their five IPL title victories. With a 54-ball 101*, which included six sixes and ten fours, the opener alone propelled CSK to 207/6.With two undefeated hundreds in just seven games, Samson has stepped up in that situation and been crucial to the team's success. It's comparable to the part Jos Buttler played in Rajasthan's run to the final, and Sanju's game has changed as a direct result of that impact," he continued.

With 293 runs in seven innings at an average of 58.60 and a strike rate of 178.65, including two hundreds, the T20 World Cup "Player of the Tournament" is CSK's top run scorer. In addition, he is currently the competition's third-highest run scorer.
Speaking about today's match between the reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT), the Shubman Gill-led team is "low on confidence" and heavily dependent on the top-order trio of Sai Sudharsan, Gill, and Jos Buttler. RCB will be looking to get their full quota of two points following a loss to Delhi Capitals (DC).

"RCB will be hoping to recover from their defeat to the Delhi Capitals and earn two points, particularly against a GT team that appears to be lacking confidence. He concluded by saying, "GT has demonstrated an over-reliance on their top order, and if bowlers like Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar can strike early, they could find it difficult because the middle order hasn't really stepped up so far."
