Mohsin Naqvi, the head of the Asian Cricket Council, has received an official email from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructing him to return the Asia Cup trophy to India. In an exclusive interview with India Today, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that they are expecting word from Naqvi and will send an official letter to the ICC if he does not respond. According to the BCCI secretary, the procedure is proceeding step by step, and the subject will continue to be pursued.
At the post-match ceremony following the final, the Indian team declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi, hence the Asia Cup is now at the ACC office in Dubai.
According to the ACC source, the ACC president received a letter last week from the BCCI secretary, Rajeev Shukla, the BCCI's ACC representative, and representatives of other member boards, such as Afghanistan and Sri Lanka Cricket, about the awarding of the trophy to India.
However, he replied that a representative of the BCCI ought to visit Dubai and retrieve the trophy from him. Thus, that issue has not yet been resolved. The BCCI has stated unequivocally that it will not accept the award from him. Therefore, the issue will probably be resolved at the ICC meeting.
The trophy row for the Asia Cup
The Indian players decided not to accept the medals and trophy from the ACC chief after defeating Pakistan in an exciting match. After that, Naqvi instructed the ACC authorities to remove the trophy and denied the Indian team the customary presentation ceremony.
The BCCI denounced Naqvi's actions during the ACC meeting on September 30 and asserted that the Asia Cup is ACC's. The Asia Cup 2025 trophy should be formally given to the winning Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, and it should be placed in the immediate possession of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), said BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla.
Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the BCCI, has already denounced the ACC chairman's actions as improper.
"The ACC chairman, who is also one of Pakistan's top leaders, has offered us the Asia Cup 2025 trophy, but we have chosen not to accept it. "That was a deliberate choice," Saikia stated.
"He is not entitled to take the medals and trophy with him because of this. It's quite regrettable and unsportsmanlike. As soon as possible, we expect the medals and trophy would be sent back to India," he continued.
Naqvi maintained his stance and refused to return the trophy to the Indian team, although expressing regret to the ACC member boards. He said that India's captain would need to go to the ACC offices in Dubai in person to pick up the cutlery if they desired it.
