Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, described his five-hour discussions with American envoys about ending the conflict in Ukraine as "necessary," "useful," and "difficult work," with the Kremlin rejecting some of the proposals.
Prior to his visit to New Delhi on Thursday, Putin spoke with the India Today TV channel. Although the entire interview has not yet been aired, portions of Putin's comments were cited by Russian state news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti.
According to a senior Trump administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity and was not authorized to comment publicly, the Russian leader's remarks coincide with the fact that U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet with Ukraine's lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov, on Thursday in Miami for additional negotiations.
Trump's reinvigorated effort to put an end to the nearly four-year conflict includes the high-stakes negotiations. Reconciling Russia's and Ukraine's "red lines" still seems to be a difficult task, but the peace movement has recently gained momentum.
Putin stated that while some elements "we can't agree to," Moscow was prepared to negotiate others.
"It's challenging work," he continued.
