Rath Yatra 2026: Puri starts building chariots, giving craftspeople more time

A day after the ceremonial Rath Katha Anukula was held on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, the construction of chariots for the renowned Rath Yatra began on Tuesday.
The first stage of building the three "tumbas," or circular wheel axles, for the three chariots started in Rathakhala. The Maharana artisans began by making holes in big hardwood planks, which they then used ancient methods to shape into circular shapes.
The Karatiya sevayats were using powerful saws to cut the big logs into the necessary parts. These ready-made wooden parts are then given to the Maharana sevayats at Rathakhala, where the tumbas are made as part of the process of making chariots.

Extended Period Owing to an Additional Month
Because there will be an intercalary (extra) month of Jyeshtha during the Rath Yatra period this year, the construction project will benefit from more time. The construction of a chariot usually takes 59 working days every year. However, the artisans will have 88 working days to do the job thanks to this year's extra month.
Put Precision and Finish First
It is anticipated that the artisans would be able to complete the construction work more precisely and with a better finish if they have more time. The customary procedure, executed by skilled workers, still adheres to the customs and craftsmanship connected to the yearly celebration in Puri.
