Rourkela will transfer 120 tonnes of garbage to a cement mill every day after updating its waste management system.

With the city already sending about 120 tonnes of waste each day to a cement industry in Rajgangpur, Rourkela is about to undergo a significant overhaul of its waste management system. As part of a larger plan to increase sustainability and lessen the strain on landfills, the action represents a substantial change in disposal methods.
The Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) has started source-level garbage segregation under the new methodology to guarantee more effective processing. In order to encourage natural decomposition and subsequently boost landscaping and soil enrichment initiatives, plans are also in place to mix biodegradable garbage with soil.
At the moment, the Tarakera dumping yard receives all waste produced in the city. This follows more than 50 years of rubbish dumping in Chhend, a practice that is currently being phased out.

In order to assess the improved waste-handling arrangements, the Rourkela Municipal Commissioner recently visited the Tarakera yard.
It is anticipated that the long-standing rubbish disposal problem at Chhend would be fixed in the upcoming two months. According to Rourkela Municipal Commissioner Diana Dastagiri, a new MCC–MRF facility was opened at Tarakera and is currently undergoing operationalization.
Zentle Parida, a local, expressed gratitude for the action, saying, "This is a welcome move." The stadium, airport, and research park are all situated here, so the ongoing bad odor had made things quite challenging, especially in the summer. We are appreciative that the administration has finally taken corrective action after we repeatedly filed written concerns.
