The body of a youth missing after a car crashed into the Birupa river was recovered on Thursday morning, a day after the vehicle drove off the IB Road section near Pandasahi under Jagatpur police station limits Cuttack. The car, which was going to Cuttack from Bhubaneswar late on Wednesday night, plunged approximately 50 feet into the river, leaving one person dead and another badly injured.
The dead has been identified as Atul, also called Udit Narayan Sahu, from Lingipur under Dhauli police station Bhubaneswar. Before being saved by young people from Nimapur Basti, his companion Anshuman Panda, who is also from Lingipur, was able to exit the vehicle and swim a short distance. He was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack severe condition, reportedly.
Five buddies reportedly traveled together, but when the car skidded off the road, only Udit and Anshuman were inside. According to Anshuman's account, Udit was operating the car and was still inside when it submerged, but he managed to get out through the sunroof.
The Reaction of Rescue Teams
According to the rescue team's assessment, it seemed likely that only one person was inside the car at the time of the collision.
Scuba divers, ODRAF members, and rescue teams from the Tangi, Choudwar, and Chauliaganj fire stations searched for the car and pulled it out of the river for about five hours. However, when the automobile was retrieved, Udit was not located inside. On Thursday, a new search operation was set to begin.
The rescue teams had concerns about the vehicle's condition. Contrary to the survivor's claim that they used the sunroof to escape, all doors were discovered closed. Rescue workers said that although the driver's side window was somewhat pushed down, there was not enough room for anyone to escape.
The car's doors were all closed, according to one rescuer. The body was not there when we searched for it. Even when the car was taken out, there was no body inside it.
Had the door been open, we may suppose the other person might have drowned, but with doors shut, it is not feasible. We are presuming there was only one individual who has already been rescued.”
A Fire Department inspector stated, “All the doors were shut, and the sunroof was closed as well. The driver’s side window was open slightly but not enough for someone to have gotten out of the vehicle.”
Although they were unable to verify the number of occupants at the time of the occurrence, eyewitnesses claimed that the four-wheeler was moving quickly before plunging into the river. The car, submerged in deeper water, was identified with difficulty, with its headlights offering little sight underwater, as sources indicated.
