In the early hours of Wednesday (Jun 3), a devastating fire at Flourish Stays, a bed and breakfast in the crowded Hauz Rani neighbourhood of Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, killed 21 people, including 12 foreigners and nine Indians. If it weren't for a local shop owner and his son, the tragedy may have been much worse. In order to build a temporary safety net that helped save many lives, the two gave up about Rs 2 lakh worth of brand-new mattresses.
In order to create a cushion that would allow trapped people to jump to safety, Riyazuddin Mansuri and his son, Armaan, laid about twenty to twenty-two mattresses on the ground outside the blazing structure.
"A neighbour told me about the fire around 8:30 am, and I arrived at the location. There was fire on the ground floor. No one was allowed to enter or exit. Shouts and requests to leap were coming from people on the top floors. Armaan was quoted by PTI as saying, "I immediately brought out about twenty to twenty-five mattresses and quilts from the shop and spread them outside the building."
Several mattresses and quilts were piled on top of one another, according to Arman's family, who had owned the mattress store across from the hotel for around 40 years, so that anyone trapped inside might jump to safety."I lost almost two lakh rupees. Additionally, we provided bedsheets that were utilised to remove the injured and dead. We also provided quilt covers. We donated everything we owned because we believe that all people, Muslims or Hindus alike, are created equal. Riyazuddin stated, "We are all Hindustani. It was my duty to help our brothers, whether he is Hindu or Muslim. Compensate Him."
Social media users have called for the government to honour and fairly pay the shop owner who gave up his brand-new mattresses to save the victims of the Malviya Nagar fire.
"Thanks to Armaan for his good deed," said a third commenter. However, the fact that these hotels are permitted to operate in spite of not adhering to any safety regulations is quite disgraceful. Government employees who accepted bribes and caused this catastrophe ought to be imprisoned."
A fourth replied: "If there is a fundraiser done for this guy, I will be happy to do my little contribution for his selfless act."
