Even though there were occasional reports of violence, such as stone-throwing on CAPF personnel in Birbhum, West Bengal saw an approximate voter turnout of over 92.72% across 152 constituencies in the ongoing Assembly elections. This is the highest participation rate in over 15 years since the 2011 election that ended the 34-year Left Front rule and brought the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress to power. The turnout exceeds both the 79.8% observed in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and the 85.55% registered in the 2011 Assembly elections.
With 100% webcasting and an AI-based monitoring system in place, the Election Commission of India (ECI) was put to the test as a sizable number of voters lined up at polling places.
Up to 5 p.m., Dakshin Dinajpur had the greatest voter turnout, followed by Coochebhar, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Jalpaiguri, Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram.
The first round of the West Bengal assembly elections, which were held in 152 constituencies with a total electorate of 3.60 crore, including almost 1.75 crore women, was distinguished by an excellent turnout. Over 8,000 polling places were designated as "highly sensitive" by the ECI, which deployed a record 2,450 companies of central forces.
In Nandigram, where Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari is running for a second term after beating Mamata Banerjee in 2021, there were high-voltage elections. Adhikari is running against Pabitra Kar, a former BJP politician who joined the Trinamool Congress and was formerly his close aide. After more than thirty years, Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is running for assembly in the Baharampur seat.
Pocket violence
Miscreants attacked a BJP candidate in Kumarganj, Dakshin Dinajpur. Subhendu Sarkar and his security guards were observed escaping the alleged attackers. "There was an attempt to attack me," Sarkar stated. I've let the ECI know. I had gone to stop Trinamool workers from letting BJP agents inside booths."Humayun Kabir, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Unnayan Party, had his convoy attacked and vandalised in Murshidabad. At least six CAPF jawans were hurt in skirmishes and stone-throwing incidents from Dubrajpur in Birbhum, several of whom needed hospitalisation.
