An Indian sailor, who was part of the crew of a merchant vessel detained by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in July, has been released and is likely to return home soon, the external affairs ministry said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the Houthi rebels released 11 sailors from the Philippines and India, including Anilkumar Raveendran. On Wednesday, the men were transported by Royal Oman Air Force aircraft to Muscat from Sanaa, the capital of Yemen that the rebels had controlled for almost ten years.
On their al-Masirah satellite news program on Wednesday, the Iran-backed Houthis, who targeted cargo ships during the Israel-Hamas conflict, declared that Oman had taken custody of the sailors who had been rescued.
The release of Raveendran, a member of the crew of the MV Eternity C, who was imprisoned in Yemen following the ship's July 7 raid by the Houthis, was applauded by the Indian government.
According to a statement from the ministry, Raveendran arrived in Muscat on Wednesday and is "expected to travel back to India soon."
To guarantee Raveendran's safe release and return, the administration was working with a number of parties. The government thanked Oman for aiding Raveendran’s release, the statement stated.
Four people were killed and the ship was sunk when the Houthi rebels attacked the MV Eternity C in the Red Sea in July.
