A team of medical experts from the UK will visit Bangladesh to review the care of ailing former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who continues to stay in a serious condition at a private hospital here, her personal physician said on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters in front of Evercare Hospital, AZM Zahid Hossain said the UK specialists would join the international medical board already supervising Zia's treatment.
"Experts from the UK will come today (Tuesday) to examine her," he said, adding that India, China, the US, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan had also extended their medical support.
Hossain said a medical board of experts from the UK, the US, and Bangladesh is overseeing Zia's care.Dr. Shahabuddin Talukder, the head of the medical board, told local media earlier that a five-person Chinese team met with the board on Monday.
Hossain emphasized that there was no scope to take the 80-year-old Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson overseas at this stage.
"We have prepared everything, but the most crucial thing to keep in mind is the patient's current condition and, above all, we do not currently have any opportunity to do anything that is outside the medical board's recommendations," he stated.
According to Hossain, the board was keeping a close eye on Zia.
Four days later, when her problems got worse, she was sent to the coronary care unit.
Her condition deteriorated significantly, and she was placed on ventilation on Sunday night, BNP Vice-Chairman Advocate Ahmed Aazam Khan stated on Monday.
Meanwhile, security was strengthened surrounding Zia on early Tuesday. Around two in the morning, police set up a roadblock outside Evercare Hospital's main gate, deploying around two dozen officers to control patient movement and bolster security.
Zia was deemed a "very, very important person" by the interim administration on Monday, which allowed the Special Security Force (SSF) to be sent to guard her. This led to increased security.
Overnight, four SSF employees examined various areas of the hospital.
As part of increased security measures, the nearby cabins have been evacuated, and Zia is currently living in a cabin on the fourth level.
Special prayers for Zia's recovery are being held across Bangladesh, notably in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Barishal, Sylhet and Mymensingh, by BNP units and supporters.
Additionally, a large number of followers posted words and prayers on social media, wishing her a speedy recovery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed profound concern over Zia’s health and offered all possible support.
In a social media message on Tuesday, Tarique Rahman, Zia's son and acting leader of the BNP, thanked people in Bangladesh and outside for their "remarkable outpouring of support" and prayers for his mother's recuperation.
"This collaborative support has been a source of enormous strength for all of us. We continue to hope for her recovery and appreciate the unity, compassion, and solidarity demonstrated during this terrible moment," he stated.
Rahman, who has been living in self-exile in London for more than ten years, "will return to Bangladesh soon," BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed told reporters late on Monday.
